If you’re suffering from a wide range of mouth or dental issues, or one specific issue that threatens to cause more issues to arise in the future, you may need to consider a full mouth rehabilitation to get to the root cause of the problem and halt it before it goes too far.
At the Windsor Centre for Advanced Dentistry, our experience and proficiency in all kinds of dental treatments allow us to perform full mouth rehabilitations to a very high standard, helping patients everywhere relieve pain, regain their confidence and live their lives.
But what exactly is full mouth rehabilitation? What can it do? And is it the right course of action for what you’re dealing with? Let’s discuss this in more detail…
What is covered in full mouth rehabilitation?
A full mouth rehabilitation is an umbrella term that may encompass numerous restorative dentistry procedures, to fix whatever issues you’re dealing with. Usually, the term is reserved for someone who has several dental problems and is struggling with day-to-day motion of the mouth or severe pain.
It usually involves you visiting your dentist for a consultation, during which time they will ask you questions about what you’re dealing with. They may then move on to taking x-rays of your mouth, impressions of your bite or other methods to determine your problems, their causes and whether mouth restoration would be of assistance.
These issues can be regarding your teeth (replacing missing teeth, protruding teeth, bite issues, teeth grinding etc), your gums (swollen or enflamed gums, gum disease, tenderness, misshapen gums etc) or even the bone structure in and around your mouth (painful jaw bones, misaligned jaws, etc.) amongst a host of other problems.
By utilising modern dental technology, specialist techniques, time and patience, our dentists can offer a plethora of services as part of full mouth rehabilitation, allowing patients to finally experience some normality in their lives again.
Treatments covered in many full mouth rehabilitations can include:
- Crowns
- Bridges
- Fillings
- Root canal procedures
Soft tissue grafting
- Bone stabilisation, amongst other impressive treatments.
IS FULL MOUTH REHABILITATION THE SAME AS FULL MOUTH RECONSTRUCTION?
While they’re technically different treatments, full mouth rehabilitation and full mouth reconstruction are often interchangeable terms and change from dentist to dentist. As a rule of thumb, full mouth reconstruction treatment involves removing and replacing all teeth – where there is no hope of saving the existing teeth because the damage is too great – while full mouth rehabilitation can consist of the numerous treatments listed above, while perhaps only replacing one of a handful of teeth rather than the entire set.
WHAT ARE THE HEALING TIMES FOR FULL MOUTH REHABILITATION?
The healing times for full mouth rehabilitation depend entirely on the level of treatment a patient undergoes. For example, a patient whose treatment consists mainly of crowns or fillings will have virtually no healing time at all and can get on with daily tasks easily.
However, more invasive treatments like root canal operations and extensive dental implants could require weeks of healing time, with recovery symptoms such as swelling or mild pain occurring in the days post-treatment.

IS FULL MOUTH REHABILITATION PAINFUL?
Again, this is entirely dependent on the level of treatment required. More in-depth dental procedures – like root canal operations and dental implants – can be quite painful during and after the treatment is completed. But your dentist will always make you as comfortable as possible before things begin to help keep your mind at ease.
Your dentist will also always give you a clear picture of how much pain to expect, how much pain is normal, and what measures to take to avoid as much pain as possible (for example, taking over-the-counter pain relief for several days). But, all in all, the results of the treatment far outweigh any pain that is felt and the experience is always worth it in the end.
HOW MUCH DOES FULL MOUTH REHABILITATION COST?
This will depend entirely on the treatments that are needed. Treatments that do not involve a lot of severe alterations may be far cheaper than more invasive ones. However, your dentist must walk you through every recommended treatment and the costs involved, so you can make a reasonable decision moving forward.
