CAUSES OF MISSING TEETH

There is a common assumption that people only lose teeth as they get older. However, there are many different ways that a person can lose their teeth irrespective of age, with causes such as periodontal disease (gum disease), dental caries (tooth decay), damage through trauma and inadequate or failed dental work.

TREATMENT FOR MISSING TEETH

There are several solutions to missing teeth and we always offer the optimum long-term treatment for the individual patient according to their needs, dental condition and budget. Solutions can include, but are not exclusive to:

Dental implant-supported crowns or bridges

A dental implant screws directly into your gum and jawbone, offering the correct support for a crown or bridge to be secured above the gum line. This method can be used to mask one missing tooth or multiple missing teeth.

All on 4 implants

This involves inserting 4 robust dental implants into the gum and jaw bone, allowing a full row of prosthetic teeth to be supported. This can be applied to either the upper or lower row of teeth, or both, hence the name ‘All-on-4’.

Fixed dental bridges

Rather than screwing implants into your jaw and gums, fixed bridges act as replacement teeth that are secured to the surrounding teeth adjacent to the missing teeth via a dental adhesive, presenting the look of an uninterrupted set of natural teeth without gaps.

Removable dentures

Also known as ‘removable false teeth’, removable dentures are simply a set of prosthetic teeth that are designed to fit into your mouth, creating the illusion of a full and healthy set of teeth. These can be made to fit over limited teeth (partial dentures) or a full row (complete dentures) if needed.

Replacing missing teeth improves a smile and helps to support the overall structure of the mouth and the shape of the face. Here at The Windsor Centre for Advanced Dentistry, we are creating healthy, vibrant and more youthful appearances through high-end techniques, skills and attention to detail.

Once a tooth has been lost it needs replacing for two primary and important reasons; functionality and aesthetics. By optimally restoring the teeth and smile you improve dental health and self-confidence.

HOW TO PREVENT MISSING TEETH

Some instances of missing teeth are unavoidable, such as those who have teeth knocked out due to harsh impacts and accidents, or those who were simply born with some teeth missing – also known as hypodontia.

However, where these causes are not at fault, poor dental hygiene is often at fault. This is why it is essential for people to take proper care of their teeth with good oral health practices, if they hope to keep as many of them as possible for as long as possible.

Standard practices of good oral hygiene are often enough to keep your teeth and gums in ship shape and prevent missing teeth – brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily and using mouthwash are all excellent choices. On top of this, avoiding over-consumption of sugary drinks and snacks will also help your teeth last longer, as these substances are known to break down the teeth and gums over time.

THE DANGERS OF LEAVING MISSING TEETH UNTREATED

While you may not be concerned by the loss of one or several teeth, missing teeth can actually cause several dental issues and affect the functionality of your remaining teeth if left untreated. By creating a bite misalignment, missing teeth could lead to severe gum and jaw pain, chewing problems, and impact damage suffered to your remaining teeth.
