PERIODONTAL DENTAL TREATMENTS

PERIODONTAL DISEASE

Periodontal disease (gum disease) is a widespread and serious health problem in the adult population worldwide. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that the disease affects 35-50% of the adult population and severe periodontitis occurs in 5–20% of adults worldwide. The effects of the disease are destruction of the healthy gum attachment to the roots of the teeth leading to gum infection, gum pocketing, gum recession and bone loss around the teeth accompanied by halitosis (bad breath), and if not treated and controlled will lead to tooth loosening, drifting and tooth loss.

There are a number of main predisposing factors to gum disease or periodontal disease:

a) Plaque control of course is a key factor, i.e. poor oral hygiene and poor home dental care increase susceptibility.

b) Smoking is a very significant factor and increases both the risk of the disease and the damage done by up to 70% or so.

c) Some people are more susceptible than others and there is in some people a greater genetic predisposition to periodontal disease and the damage done by it.

d) Poor quality dental work or defective dental restorations.

Periodontal disease has also been linked to other systemic illnesses, and increasing amounts of research show a correlation between conditions such as heart disease and pre-term births and diabetes, although the exact mechanism and link between periodontitis and these systemic diseases/conditions is not clear and research is ongoing to understand this better.

With advances in research, gene medicine, molecular biology and regenerative treatments there is an increased understanding and hence more effective treatments now available.Treatment, rehabilitation and restoration of the patients affected by even severe periodontal disease is a very large part of what we do here at the Windsor Centre for Advanced Dentistry, and our ‘cutting-edge’ expertise in periodontal treatment, bone & gum regeneration, dental implants and restorative dentistry means that there is hope for you, even if your mouth has been seriously affected as illustrated by some of the case examples below.

Also the huge amount of bone loss around the roots of the teeth evident on the panoramic X-rays. The patient on the right side is losing most of her teeth and needs a careful inter-disciplinary treatment to achieve an optimum restoration of her teeth and smile (the case is illustrated below).

The case illustrations below highlight the importance of an inter-disciplinary approach in advanced cases of periodontal disease in order to achieve the optimum results. Advanced periodontal disease often leads to the loss of many teeth and leaves sufferers with severely compromised function and aesthetics, as well as affecting their general health and quality of life. These cases demand tremendous skill and experience to get the best results – and that’s where our expertise is invaluable. As you can see, dental implants play a crucial role in the restoration of patients with advanced periodontal disease and breakdown.

Testimonial

“I was just so down about the way my teeth looked. Every time I glanced in the mirror I thought they looked horrendous and it had got to the stage where I covered my mouth with my hand when I spoke. I hated pictures of myself smiling and had become incredibly self-conscious. You get paranoid, imagining all the time what people are thinking when you speak or smile.

I decided it was time to take action and began researching options on the internet, where she came across the Windsor Centre for Advanced Dentistry. I looked at the case studies on their website and could really relate to them. When I saw the before and after shots of patients they’d treated I just thought ‘wow’ – if they could do that for me it would be fantastic. The treatment spanned two years but once on the road I never looked back. The most memorable moment was relatively early on, when I had the first temporary bridge fitted, even then my teeth looked a hundred times better than before and I could already see what a dramatic transformation there was going to be. I was able to start smiling again.

What especially impressed me was their professionalism and friendliness. Everyone made me feel so at ease and the atmosphere was totally relaxed and calm. It sounds odd, but it was actually a lovely place to be! And Tidu’s skill is quite exceptional. I’d rung around other dental specialists before choosing his practice but none were willing or had the expertise to take on my case. I felt quite desperate before and I worried about the future, but having the work done has been so liberating and it’s enabled me to get on with my life.” Katherine (38).

Aesthetic Restorative Treatment of Advanced Periodontal Disease – Case 2: Periodontal disease treatment, orthodontics, full mouth rehabilitation and dental implants

Severe periodontal disease ravaged this lady’s mouth and had caused severe bone loss gum recession, drifting and loosening of all her teeth. Faced with the prospect of losing all her teeth and having dentures she sought us out. We successfully treated the disease and saved a few teeth mainly on the lower jaw (the lower front teeth), realigned the teeth with orthodontic braces and then restored the hopeless teeth with dental implant crowns and bridges after first regenerating her bone and gum tissue through a combination of orthodontics and surgical augmentation techniques for the bone and gum. The ‘before’ X-ray (on the left) shows the extent of the bone loss which was successfully regenerated with a combination of orthodontic treatment and bone and gum rebuilding. The end result is fabulous and shows the complete restoration of the bone and gum tissue.
