With Christmas just a few days away, we are all ready to enjoy the festivities. From mince pies to champagne, selection boxes to hundreds of sweets, this time of year tends to be a time we all eat too much! However, while it’s great to enjoy yourself spare just a little thought for your teeth.
We know that snacking and drinking sugary products is something we all do, but at Christmas this can make it a pretty miserable time for your poor teeth, especially over Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Traditional foods like Cranberries tend to be a delicious addition to your Turkey based lunch but did you know they also offer some benefits to your teeth? Some studies have shown they can help prevent gum disease and tooth decay. However, it’s important to note that they are also acidic so over-indulging can have a detrimental effect on your teeth.
Here’s five tips that may help you over the festive period and maybe, they will at least mean you can take steps to minimise damage to your teeth and help keep them safe amongst the sugars.
Mince Pies and Christmas Pudding
Mince pies and Christmas pudding are a staple of the Christmas diet. However they are full of sugar. As well as being full of dried fruit (which tends to be high in sugar) they are also known to stick to teeth. So if you do choose to eat them, try and remember that anything sticking to your teeth will be damaging them.
Don’t be tempted to lose your routine
If you’re a stickler for your oral hygiene don’t treat Christmas any differently. While your teeth are taking a bit of punishment, there’s no need to forget about your flossing, brushing and overall oral care.
If you’ve got kids, don’t be tempted to allow them to forget about their teeth brushing, before Christmas presents!
As well as the word that’s used in photographs it’s also good for your teeth. You may not realise but cheese is great for helping your mouth get a natural acid balance. Again, off-set against sugary goodies, it could really help to minimise damage.
Don’t get too enthusiastic with the beer!
While lots of people drink over the festive period, some will often use their teeth as bottle openers. This is really not a good idea – even if you have super strong teeth. Your teeth aren’t tools, so make sure you’ve got a bottle opener to hand when you need one and then you can avoid getting any chips or breakages!
Moderately does it!
Moderation is something we can all benefit from when it comes to foods! So while you want to enjoy yourself (and why wouldn’t you?) do take it easy and try and look after yourself.
Even if you replace one glass of fizzy pop for a glass of milk – it all helps!
A recent piece of research published by the British Dental Journal has offered up the results in a study of 130 people who feared dental treatment and come to some interesting findings.
For anyone with a dental phobia, the act of going to the dentist can be hard enough but when the majority of those with fear don’t go to the dentist at all, things can get very tricky.
However, this new research suggests that a potential solution to help with treatment is to undergo Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, because it can mean patients are relaxed enough to have treatment with no need for sedation at all.
In the study carried out by Kings College, all of the participants had talking therapy, which resulted in being able to have treatment without sedation for more than three quarters of them. A good sign if ever there was one.
For dentists generally, the idea of a patient being sedated actually doesn’t help those with dental phobias combat the problem. It only deals with the effects of it and it’s a vicious cycle that continues forever until it’s dealt with.
The research looked at 99 women and 31 men who attended a therapy clinic at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and within this group, three quarters had some kind of dental phobia. The remainder had a very specified fear of an aspect of dentistry, such as the drill.
Of all the patients, four-fifths (79%) went on to have dental treatment without the need for sedation, while 6% had their dental treatment under sedation.
The average number of therapy appointments required before a patient received dental treatment without sedation was just five.
Many dentists don’t like the idea of a patient being sedated during treatment as it means they cannot communicate with patients as they’d like. Therefore, these new findings could be a good way to combat dental phobias, while allowing dentists to really work with their patients.
For many people with dental phobias, it’s often something that starts during childhood and with no work to cure the issue, it then continues into adulthood.
So what’s the key to overcoming a dental phobia?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy essentially makes you talk about things and during this process you may well be able to understand why you are scared and how to combat it.
It’s a more organic way to deal with a phobia but it’s also a very successful solution to a lot of people (not just those with dental phobias).

A mum in Withington is currently on a mission to combat child tooth decay and unhealthy eating, after setting up a lottery funded healthy snacks club at Sutton Primary Academy.
Ms Foti’s mission is all about teaching children to understand what’s healthy, while encouraging them to make healthy snacks themselves. She is also teaching them how they can recognise the high sugar content in common food and drinks.
This initiative ties in well with the current demands for soft drinks to be taxed in an effort to fight child obesity in this country, which has been on the increase in recent years.
Ms Foti is working with pupils of all ages at the school, teaching them how to make and bake their very own healthy homemade snacks using low sugar, wholegrain where possible and locally grown fruit and vegetables.
As well as this initiative, Ms Foti writers her own healthy food and lifestyle blog, helping to share her knowledge and research on sugar and how it affects our lives and our health.
A number of children under the age of 10 have to have teeth out due to tooth decay – which for some is more than just alarming and perhaps shows what damage processed sugars are having on us all.
Ms Foti’s club has inspired children to make everything from cheese and veggie muffins to zero sugar energy balls and has even created magic, instant ice-cream!
The club itself is free and Ms Foti started with year six children in an effort to reach all the pupils who want to take part eventually.
As well as this initiative, Ms Foti also runs a healthy dinner club at Withington Primary School as well as a foot stall in Hereford on Fridays, so she’s obviously a busy lady on a mission!
