So in this week’s blog we want to help readers identify signs of tooth decay, so that you can get your teeth looked at.

Tooth decay can be a sign of underlying problems so it is potentially something you should not ignore, especially if you are overdue a consultation or appointment with the dentist.

One of the most identifiable signs of a need to visit your dentist is of course tooth decay. While toothache is a fairly obvious reason to visit a dentist, it is the start of that decay where no physical symptoms are present that mean you need to do something.

An actual toothache can be attributed to a cavity which means that damage has already been done. However, it’s important to note that this can be resolved with good dentistry and after care.

Cavities are the molars or incisors in your mouth that will lead to decay and if nothing is done, loss of teeth. This decay can occur on the crown of your teeth or between the gaps in your teeth. It’s cause is relatively simple as well. Lack of dental care and hygiene or perhaps less effort spent on cleaning teeth is usually the cause.

It is a very common issue that many people in their mid to late twenties and upwards suffer from. You can of course assist your teeth and their health by undertaken a thorough and regular cleaning and oral hygiene routine. This means not simply brushing for five seconds in the morning, but taking care to clean your teeth well and of course ensure that the gaps between your teeth are free of food!

The range of cavities is fairly extensive and for some, a root cavity will be one of the most troublesome. This is down to receding gums, which end up leaving parts of your teeth exposed and therefore much more vulnerable. The exposed roots do not have enamel on them and if you simply leave them will inevitably lead to decay.

Fillings and crowns already present in your mouth can lead to recurrent decay as these areas can accumulate plaque, which will of course only lead to decay if untreated.

Coronal cavities are extremely common and they generally occur in both children and adults. These areas are located between the teeth or on the chewing surfaces. Therefore if food gets trapped then cavities will of course accelerate decay if untreated.

Your teeth are extremely important and any cavities left without treatment or attention from a good dentist can eventually lead to missing teeth, decay and of course eventually damage to things like nerve endings.

So rather than look at the potential of having teeth removed when it’s too late, it’s always better to see your dentist.

However, it’s important to say that a good aesthetic dentist will be able to help you if you have been less than kind to your teeth over the years.
